Bethlehem ?

There may be more to Bethlehem than we thought…

Considering the fact that Bethlehem is not a tremendously popular place in the scriptures, I wondered what other connections Jesus might have with Bethlehem

There are a few mentions of it in Genesis and Judges, along with a few other OT books.  It is also the beginning and the place of return in the book of Ruth, which we could make a connection with. But then in Samuel we learn that Jesse (David’s Father) raised his family in Bethlehem and that is where Samuel went to identify the “ruddy” boy who would be the next king. Now that’s something! But isn’t it interesting that God sometimes chooses kings who are much different than those we may consider?

1 Samuel 16:7  But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”

I know that God looks at people much differently than I do… I also know that God uses events and even places to accomplish His goals. But what is in Bethlehem?

He must of wanted Mary and joseph there for some reason. It wasn’t until Caesar Augustus issued the decree that everyone needed to go to their home town to register that Joseph and Mary needed to travel to Bethlehem. (A journey some 90 miles away on foot) But Bethlehem after all is just a little town about 6 miles from Jerusalem.  Shouldn’t this king be from some place worthy of honor like Bethel, Caesarea, or Jerusalem?

Then I thought … isn’t that like God? He showed us in Samuel that kings can come from the least expected. And then we learn that goes not only for earthly kings, but also heavenly ones as well.  For the King of Kings was born in this little obscure town outside of Jerusalem.

Micah 5:2  2 “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.”

The next time you think you have little to offer….You may want to think again…

After all, little Bethlehem is the place where kings come from…
